New NIOSH Checklist Helps Companies Protect Workers’ Hearing

A new checklist developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) can help companies evaluate the effectiveness of their Hearing Loss Prevention Programs* (HLPPs) and better protect their workers from noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL).
With an estimated 22 million workers exposed to potentially damaging noise each year, NIHL is a common – and costly -- occupational illness, even in workplaces where workers are protected by HLPPs.
“Although standards and regulations vary by country, virtually all hearing loss prevention programs require several elements: the measurement of noise exposures; the implementation of noise controls to reduce noise levels; conducting hearing tests on exposed workers; training of exposed workers; the use of hearing protection by exposed workers; and certain recordkeeping activities,” according to a NIOSH Science Blog post..."
